The Emerald Ruler
2020, Russia
The painterly approach employed here is grounded in the academic mosaic principle of form modeling; however, in terms of mosaic style, the work synthesizes two distinct methods: the Roman technique—based on smalt tesserae (micromosaic)—and the Florentine technique—utilizing shaped slices of natural gemstones. The background and foreground elements are executed using the Florentine mosaic method, while the figure of the frog is rendered using the Roman tesserae micromosaic technique. The size of the tesserae modules ranges from 0.5 to 2 mm.
Materials used in the creation of the piece include Far Eastern ophicalcite, Australian moss agate, tiger's eye, Ural jasper, Australian tiger iron, and both Italian and Russian smalt.
